MRKH syndrome affects the development of the uterus and vagina. Fertility options depend on the individual anatomy, ovarian function and medical circumstances. For some people, IVF with gestational surrogacy may be considered where legally available and medically appropriate.

What this means for having children

When the ovaries function, women with MRKH may be able to use their own eggs: with IVF, eggs can be collected and fertilized, and the embryos carried by a gestational surrogate. The child can then be genetically related to the intended mother.

Is MRKH a recognised indication in Armenia?

Armenian law requires a medical contraindication to pregnancy, and absence of the uterus means a pregnancy cannot be carried. Married couples and single women can be considered, subject to the genetic-link rules and an individual review. See eligibility rules.

Special points for IVF with MRKH

  • Cycle timing: without periods, the doctor uses hormone tests and ultrasound to start stimulation.
  • Ovary position: in some women the ovaries sit higher than usual; your doctor assesses how retrieval can be done, sometimes with an adjusted technique.
  • Kidney check: MRKH is sometimes linked with kidney differences, so your doctor may ask for an ultrasound before treatment.
  • Genetics: the inheritance of MRKH is not fully understood; a doctor or genetic counselor can discuss what is known for your situation.

What about uterus transplant?

Uterus transplantation is a specialist procedure, still considered experimental in many places and available in a limited number of centers. It involves major surgery and immune-suppressing drugs, and suitability is assessed by specialists. Gestational surrogacy is an established alternative.
