Egg donation gives women with low ovarian reserve, early menopause or repeated IVF failure — and single fathers through surrogacy — an option for building a family, depending on medical and legal assessment. Here is an overview of the usual stages at our partner clinics.

1

Anonymous donors

Healthy women aged 18–35 (Article 14 of Armenian law), medically, genetically and psychologically screened. No screening can rule out every risk.

2

Detailed profiles

Non-identifying profiles: photos where the donor has consented, appearance, education, blood group and family health history.

3

Fresh or frozen

Fresh cycles with synchronization, or frozen donor eggs for less waiting (some frozen eggs do not survive thawing).

4

With or without surrogacy

Transfer to the intended mother or to a gestational surrogate.

Step by step

  1. Consultation and tests — your medical history, and tests for the intended mother (if she will carry) and the sperm provider.
  2. Choosing a donor — tell us your preferences (ethnic background, appearance, blood group, education); your coordinator sends matching profiles. Request Egg Donor Profiles.
  3. Donor screening confirmation — blood tests, infections, ultrasound, AMH and genetic screening according to the program.
  4. Cycle preparation — the recipient’s (or surrogate’s) uterine lining is prepared with medication, synchronized with the donor’s cycle.
  5. Donor stimulation — about 10–12 days of hormone injections with ultrasound monitoring.
  6. Egg retrieval — a 15–20 minute procedure under light sedation.
  7. Fertilization (IVF/ICSI) — on the same day, with fresh or frozen sperm.
  8. Embryo culture — 5–6 days to the blastocyst stage; optional PGT for medical reasons. Numbers fall at each step: not every egg retrieved is mature, not every mature egg fertilizes and not every embryo reaches the blastocyst stage.
  9. Embryo transfer — one or two embryos, as decided by the doctor; remaining embryos suitable for freezing are frozen.
  10. Pregnancy test — about 10–14 days after the transfer.

Typical timeline

StageTime
Consultation to donor match1–6 weeks
Synchronization and stimulation3–6 weeks
Retrieval to transfer5–6 days (or later with frozen embryos)
Transfer to pregnancy test10–14 days
Is the donor anonymous? Yes. Under Armenian law her identity is confidential and she has no parental rights. You receive detailed non-identifying information. Anonymity cannot be guaranteed in every future circumstance (for example, consumer DNA tests), so we encourage parents to think about how they will talk to their child about donation.

Frequently asked questions

Who needs donor eggs?

Your doctor may suggest donor eggs, for example, for very low ovarian reserve or early menopause, poor egg quality after several IVF cycles, or a serious genetic condition; single men use donor eggs through surrogacy. Each case is assessed individually.

Can I choose the sex of the baby?

No. Choosing a baby’s sex is not permitted under Armenian law, except in the limited cases set out in Article 11(3): a risk of a sex-linked inherited disease, or a family that already has three children of the same sex.

How many trips to Yerevan are needed?

For the IVF stage, usually one trip of about 7–14 days for the woman who will carry, or 2–3 days for the sperm provider. Frozen sperm can also be shipped.
